The Mid-Year Audit: Why Your January Goals Failed (And How to Fix Them Now)
"July is a crossroads. Which way is your soul calling you?"
Do you remember that crisp, cold morning on January 1st? Maybe you were sitting with a fresh notebook and a steaming cup of coffee, feeling that surge of "new year, new me" energy. You wrote down goals that felt monumental, promising yourself that this would be the year you finally launched that business, mended that relationship, or finally put yourself first.
But then, life happened.
The kids got sick. A project at work went sideways. The car broke down. Suddenly, those vibrant goals started to feel like heavy weights. By February, many of us are already dragging our feet. By July? Well, for many, those January resolutions have become ghosts, quietly haunting us from the back of our minds, making us feel like we’ve failed before we’ve even reached the finish line.
If you’re feeling "stuck" right now, looking at a half-finished list of goals with a heavy heart, I want you to take a deep breath. You haven't failed. You’re just in the middle of your story, and the middle is exactly where the real magic happens.
The January Ghost: Why We Set the Wrong Goals
It’s a startling reality: statistics show that nearly 80% of New Year’s resolutions are abandoned by the second week of February. By the time we hit July, only about 8-9% of people are actually on track to finish what they started.
Why is the failure rate so high? It’s often because we set "Should Goals" instead of "Soul Goals."
In my early days as a business consultant, I spent years helping people optimize their external lives, their marketing, their finances, and their strategies. But I noticed something: people would hit their numbers and still feel empty. They were building bridges to places they didn't actually want to go.
We often set goals based on what society, our parents, or our social media feeds tell us we should want. We aim for a "perfect" life that doesn't actually fit our unique, messy, beautiful reality. When a goal isn’t rooted in your soul, it feels like walking through deep mud. Eventually, the "quicksand" of daily life pulls you under because you don’t have the internal fire needed to keep your head above water.
"Escaping the quicksand starts with emotional clarity."
The Quicksand of Being "Stuck"
Have you ever felt like you’re running as fast as you can, but you’re not actually moving? That’s the emotional quicksand. It takes your breath away and leaves you feeling exhausted and powerless.
When your January goals fail, it’s rarely a lack of willpower. Usually, it’s a lack of emotional clarity. You might be trying to "get healthy" while ignoring the deep-seated stress that makes you reach for comfort food. Or you’re trying to "be more productive" at a job that is slowly draining your spirit.
At Joy & Associates, I help people look past the strategy and dive into the soul work. We don't just ask what you want to achieve; we ask who you want to be. If your goals aren't aligned with your true self, your subconscious will find a way to sabotage them every single time.
Your Mid-Year Audit: The Soulful Reset
The beautiful thing about July is that it’s a crossroads. You aren't tied to the version of yourself that wrote those goals six months ago. You have my full permission, right here, right now, to pivot.
Let’s walk through a soulful "Mid-Year Audit" together. Grab a pen and be honest with yourself. This isn't about judgment; it’s about discovery.
Step 1: The Integrity Check
Look at your original goals. For each one, ask: Does this still make my heart beat a little faster, or does it feel like a chore? If it feels like a "should," cross it off. Let it go. You don’t need that extra weight.
Step 2: The "Why" Diagnosis
For the goals you still care about but haven't touched, why did they stall?
Was the goal too vague? (e.g., "be happy" vs. "spend 20 minutes a day reading")
Did you lack a support system?
Was the "quicksand" of old habits too strong?
Step 3: Redesign for the Now
Instead of trying to conquer the world by December, let’s focus on small, heart-centered wins. Use this checklist to reset your path:
Shrink the Goal: If you wanted to lose 50 pounds, focus on walking for 15 minutes after dinner. Make it so easy you can’t say no.
Find Your Anchor: Connect your goal to a feeling. Instead of "saving money," focus on "creating freedom."
Schedule a "Check-In": Don't wait until next January. Put a date on your calendar for August 1st to see how you're feeling.
Ask for Help: You don’t have to do this alone. Whether it’s a friend, a partner, or a professional coach, accountability is the bridge between a dream and a reality.
Embracing the Wabi-Sabi Life
In Japan, there is a beautiful concept called Wabi-Sabi: the art of finding beauty in imperfection. They have a tradition called Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with gold. The cracks aren't hidden; they are highlighted, making the piece more valuable and beautiful than it was before it broke.
"Your pivots are the gold in your cracks. You are perfectly imperfect."
Your life is a Kintsugi bowl. Your "failed" goals, your pivots, and your mid-year resets are the golden threads that make your story unique. You are allowed to be perfectly imperfect.
If you spent the first half of the year stuck in the mud, that’s okay. That time wasn't wasted; it was spent learning what doesn't work. It was spent discovering where the quicksand is so you can avoid it next time.
A New Chapter Starts Today
I remember a client of mine, let’s call her Sarah. She came to me in June, absolutely devastated that she hadn't started her career transition. She felt like a failure because she was still in the same office she hated in January.
We did a mid-year audit and realized her January goal was too corporate: she was trying to jump into another high-stress field because she thought she "should." Once we pivoted to what her soul actually craved: creative coaching: the momentum was unstoppable. By October, she had her first client.
The second half of your year doesn't have to look like the first. You have the strategy, and now you have the permission to make it personal.
"Ready to find your footing? " Let’s walk this path together."
Are you ready to stop fighting the quicksand and start building your bridge? Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation to clear the fog and find your direction. I’ve spent over 25 years helping thousands of people just like you find their "something."
Don't let another six months slip through your fingers. Let’s design a life you actually love living. Have a session with me. Take charge of your life. It starts with a conversation.
You’ll be glad you did.
